Duck Duck Shed 2025: Celebrating Las Vegas’s Architectural Heritage

Duck Duck Shed, organized by The Neon Museum, is dedicated to celebrating and preserving the unique architectural and cultural heritage of Las Vegas. Scheduled for April 24-27, 2025, this year’s event promises over 20 individual programs, including architectural and historical walking tours, curated exhibitions, and presentations from industry leaders and scholars.

The 2025 Walking Tour: A Journey Through Time

One of the highlights of the 2025 Duck Duck Shed event is a meticulously curated two-hour walking tour that invites participants to stand on the very spot where Las Vegas began. Starting at Binion’s Gambling Hall, attendees will traverse legendary casinos and glittering neon signs, uncovering hidden, often overlooked places that have shaped the city’s storied past over the last century. The tour culminates at Vegas Vickie’s Lounge, where participants can unwind with a complimentary drink, reflecting on the rich history they’ve just experienced.

Golden Nugget

Established on August 30, 1946, by Guy McAfee, the Golden Nugget stands as one of Las Vegas’s oldest and most storied casinos. Located on Fremont Street, often referred to as “Glitter Gulch,” the casino was the largest of its kind at its inception, symbolizing the city’s burgeoning post-war entertainment scene.

Architecturally, the Golden Nugget has undergone several transformations, evolving from its original western-themed facade to a more modern aesthetic. In 1977, under the ownership of Steve Wynn, the casino expanded to include a hotel tower, marking its first four-diamond rating from the Mobil Travel Guide.

Beyond its architectural significance, the Golden Nugget houses the “Hand of Faith,” the largest gold nugget on public display, weighing a remarkable 875 troy ounces. This treasure adds to the casino’s allure, drawing visitors from around the globe.

Binion’s Gambling Hall

In 1951, Texas gambler Benny Binion purchased the property at 128 Fremont Street, transforming it into Binion’s Gambling Hall. Binion’s philosophy was simple: provide patrons with good food, good whiskey, and a fair gamble.

Architecturally, Binion’s retains much of its vintage charm, with a facade that harkens back to the classic Vegas era. The interior boasts rich wood paneling and nostalgic decor, offering a glimpse into the city’s storied past.

One of Binion’s most notable contributions to Las Vegas culture is the establishment of the World Series of Poker in 1970. This annual event has grown into the world’s most prestigious poker tournament, cementing Binion’s legacy in the gambling world.

Vegas Vickie’s Lounge

Vegas Vickie’s Lounge
Concluding the walking tour at Vegas Vickie’s Lounge offers participants a chance to relax in a setting that encapsulates Las Vegas’s vibrant history. The lounge is named after the iconic neon cowgirl, Vegas Vickie, who graced Fremont Street for decades. Restored to her former glory, she now resides inside the lounge, symbolizing the city’s dedication to preserving its luminous past.

The lounge’s ambiance, with its classic decor and vintage-inspired cocktails, provides the perfect backdrop to reflect on the journey through Las Vegas’s architectural and cultural heritage.

Duck Duck Shed’s 2025 walking tour offers a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the rich tapestry of Las Vegas’s history. By exploring iconic casinos like the Golden Nugget and Binion’s, participants gain a deeper appreciation for the city’s evolution and the stories that have shaped its legendary status.
